Frequently Asked Questions/FAQ’s

Fluffy Feather Farm isn’t open to public visits. We know how special it would be to meet the animals in person, but we’ve found that keeping the farm closed helps us protect the health and safety of our animals and our team. It ensures the animals stay healthy, comfortable, stress-free, and happy in their routines.

The good news? You can still visit us anytime virtually! Visit our social media pages on:

Fluffy Feather Farm began in 2022 as the next chapter in our lifelong love of animals. For more than a decade, we worked in the pet industry building and running a global organization that supported the canine community. After years in the corporate world, we traded our coats and ties for barn boots and a simpler, more meaningful life with our twin boys, Kaleb and Keegan.

Nestled on our 140-acre family farm in Harvard, Illinois, we started raising a herd of Miniature Scottish Highland Cattle…our famously fluffy “pasture puppies.” From there, the farm grew to include miniature donkeys, goats, chickens, ducks, and even a garden full of fresh produce. Every member of our family plays a part, whether it’s feeding the animals, filming their latest antics or stocking the farmstand.

At the heart of everything we do are three values: family, transparency, and quality. To us, Fluffy Feather Farm isn’t just a business, it’s home. It’s where love, laughter, and a whole lot of fluff fills every day.

As Adam likes to say, “We’re proud to bring you the finest miniature fluffy cows from some of the best breeding stock in the country. They’re part of our family now.”

We fell in love with miniature Scottish Highland cattle because they are gentle, charming and perfectly suited for small family farms. Their fluffy coats and big personalities make every day a little brighter here at Fluffy Feather Farm. Check out our YouTube video to see how it all began!

Because honestly…how could we not?!

Before the fluffy cows ever arrived, Adam dreamed of having a miniature donkey. That dream started years ago when he met a donkey named Goldie, the gentle “greeter” outside a gold mine in Colorado. Goldie’s curious eyes and calm, friendly nature made a lasting impression and ever since that day, Adam knew donkeys had to be part of our story.

Miniature donkeys are also known for their gentle temperaments, social personalities, and surprising intelligence. They bond deeply with people (and each other), making them wonderful companions for both animals and humans alike…and a great fit for our farm!

A “Bonkey” is what we lovingly call a baby donkey here at Fluffy Feather Farm! It’s our own little term of endearment for the tiniest members of Donkeyland. 🎥 Check out our video here.

Kaleb has a condition called Alopecia areata, which causes hair loss. To learn more about Alopecia areata, visit the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF)‘s website.

We’re here to help you figure out if it’s the right time. Give us a call, send us a note…or if your carrier pigeon’s up for the job, that works too!

We’ve been fortunate to learn from amazing mentors in the miniature cattle world, and we’re always happy to pay that kindness forward. Whether you’re dreaming about your first “pasture puppy” or planning to grow your herd, we’ll help you make the best choice for your setup, space, and goals. And if we don’t know the answer, we’ll find it together.

🎥 Cow Nutrition 101

Well… that’s a loaded question! 😉 The honest answer is…it depends.

If you have a large pasture, Highlands can often live primarily off grass and natural forage during the warmer months, with a few supplements here and there. In the winter, though, they’ll likely need hay and grain to help maintain their health and body condition.

It’s a balance that changes with the seasons, weather, and each cow’s unique dietary needs. Some eat a little more, some a little less, but we always keep a close eye to make sure every fluffy belly is happy and healthy.

🎥 Cow Nutrition at Fluffy Feather Farm

The general rule of thumb is that one miniature cow needs about two acres of space if you plan to let them graze naturally without supplementing much hay.

But here’s the truth…it really depends on your setup and your goals. If you want lush green grass year-round that never gets eaten down, you might need closer to 10 acres for two cows. If you’re feeding hay regularly and not relying on pasture grass, a half-acre per cow could be enough.

It all comes down to personal preference, pasture quality, and how you want to manage your herd. Every farmer we know says the same thing: when it comes to land, you can never have too much space for happy cows!

When you purchase an animal from us, we’ll work with you to make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible. Most of our customers arrange their own transportation, but we’re always happy to offer guidance and point you in the right direction.

For cattle or donkeys, that usually means a properly sized livestock trailer with good airflow, secure footing, and enough space for them to stand comfortably. Smaller animals like goats, chickens, or ducks travel best in sturdy crates or carriers designed for their size and safety.

We’ll also help you plan the timing of your trip. Shorter drives and mild weather make transportation easier on the animals, and before you leave, we’ll share what your new friends are used to eating so you can have the right feed and plenty of fresh water ready when they arrive.

Our goal is simple: to ensure your new animal arrives healthy, comfortable, and ready to settle into its new home. And we’re here for you every step of the way…before, during, and even after the journey.

Yes, we often do! The best way to see which animals are currently available is by visiting our Available Animals page, where you’ll find photos, details, and personality notes for each one. If an animal catches your eye, just fill out the contact form on their profile, and we’ll be in touch with more information.

Because our animals are part of a working farm and family environment, availability can change quickly. We recommend checking the page often and reaching out right away if you see a calf, donkey, goat, or other farm friend you’d like to learn more about.

We believe that ethical breeding and lifelong care are part of what make our animals thrive — both here and in their new homes.

The animals at Fluffy Feather Farm all have different lifespans depending on their species and care. Our Miniature Scottish Highland Cattle can often live 15–20 years with proper nutrition and a healthy environment. Miniature donkeys tend to live even longer — usually 25–35 years — while goats typically live around 10–15 years. Chickens and ducks have shorter lifespans, usually around 6–10 years.

Of course, every animal is unique. Factors like diet, environment, and healthcare all play a big role in how long they live and how happy they are along the way. We do everything we can to give each animal the best possible start, ensuring they’re healthy, well-socialized, and ready to thrive in their new homes.
